Arranging the music of one song...

"Dancing Mad"

Primary Game: Final Fantasy VI (Square , 1994, SNES), music by Nobuo Uematsu

Our first ReMix from newcomer waxingeloquent is from the oft-mixed FF6 soundtrack. Judges praised this trance ReMix for a fresh take on the original, and had few gripes sans the percussion needing a volume adjustment in the upwards direction. There's a good smattering of synth patches, many with short releases for a gating effect, cool arpeggios (arpeggios? In a Final Fantasy track? Nawwwww ^^) that pan across the stereo field, a pumpin' bass, and especially good textures and d'n'b drums around 2'40" with church bells in the background. This piece builds nicely to this section, which does increase in overall intensity for some forward development. There's a breakdown after that, things come back but not at full intensity, and the mix ends with chords, the niftily pitch-bend happy bass, and the resonating of several final church bells - good, memorable conclusion. This is really tight stuff from a programming perspective, with all T's crossed and I's dotted in terms of synth variety, modulation, panning, and effects. Furthermore, though bordering on too much repetition for a brief moment earlier on, there's definite development and the second half is clearly distinct from the first. Damn solid initial mix - pump up the drums a bit and go out on a limb with a solo or something similar on the next one and waxingeloquent has me hooked. As it is, this is better-than-good trance that shows some skills and attention to detail and goes the extra step to ensure variety and evolving tone. Recommended.

Good changing of the textures over time. The saw was the weak point, since it was very vanilla. Enjoyed the breakbeat loop thrown in there in the second half, which I’ve heard in other tracks. The dropoff at 4:35 was well done, with good bass writing followed by getting subtractive with the textures. Shows its age, yet has good arranging/interpretation fundamentals.

Sample quality is a little dated in some spots, and the mix overall lacks the punch it could have, but dang, that arrangement is classic, and still awesome today. The structure follows the original closely enough, but there is a lot of interpretation and some great builds and breakdowns.

Great stuff. :-)

Okay this is rare...You have rivaled the Great Nobuo Uematsu's version with this song, dare I say, you have done a better job.

!!! Very Nice! The very beginning is just a bit.... something I didn't like, but ince the theme had been introduced, I liked it the whole way.

9/10.

To me, this sounds like a Final Fantasy VI/Perfect Dark remix. Albeit, I've only plaed the former.

Regardless, this is a lot more confrontation than nihilistic comedy. I like that. I loved Kefka for his insaness, but I don't mind this turning into a more Septhiroth battle.

I think this is a good remix. And thank God it doesn't have any vocals.

Good job!

Niiice, had that swooooshy feeling in the beginning from the game, I recognized this track right away. It may have sounded a bit too much alike the OST, but it still had a soothing and almost groovy mood, but gained some more tempo in the middle, nice thing. Good usage of all the techno stuff, wax.

I really like this thing. Sounds like a battle to the death, as it should. I can't wait to hear the finished fourth form.

Very nice. It's a little bit repetitive at some points, but the middle section at about 2:40 (that sounds faintly like Kefka's theme at one point) is really brilliant. The choice of instruments and percussion is wonderful. I honestly have no complaints here, except for it being slightly repetitive at times (such as the introduction and ending). What I like most about it is that it combines many different styles, such as classical and breakbeat, to create something truly unique.

Props to waxingeloquent for doing something different.

It's half past March now and I'm still listening to this MP3 at least several times a day. It has it all: longevity, interest, true to the original while being innovative and excellent production quality. It's tracks like this that either give me a kick op the backside to get on and learn this stuff or else cry in a corner because the cahnces that I'd ever get this good are slim :)

It's about 5 days after my last post on this song and I just wanted to say I'm still listening to it. On repeat. Constantly. Sometimes it's in a playlist with other songs, but mostly it's by itself. This has broken a new record, ladies and gents. It's officially the song I've listened to the longest and the most without getting sick of it. 8O

This song really suprised me. The way the opening sounds really doesn't do justice to how the rest of the song lays out. Good use of the running lead synths at the 45 second mark. Good use of minor chords. The drums could be a little louder in the 1.15 section. Good chord use at 2.05. Good use of timpanis throughout this whole song. Good change of mood at 2.34 as well as good use of distorted guitar and panning snare drum. Really good build up at 3.02. REALLY POWERFUL. Starting to get used to the main theme. Could use a little variation, but it is still keeping me interested. Really good change at 4.19. Good use of church bells. Good fade out at the end. The church bells really put the finishing touches on it. I can't say enough about this piece. It is by far my favorite in my playlist right now. I only wish that I had the time, talent, and resources to produce a fine piece of work such as this. High recommendation from me.

I must agree with TastEPlasma. I think the quieter drums give room to a more compelling, wider, richer sound with everything else. And the drumrolls are so fun! Good stuff. Very much looking forward to hearing more. :D

I really really liked this mix. I am no musician, but somehow the overfeel and intricasy(sp?) of this mix was very appealing. One of the facts I very much liked that has been somewhat viewed upon negatively by fellow listeners is the downplayed drums. It is refreshing to have a mix that can be energetic without having an overly strong bass track. Overall the remixed tune had a very orchestrated, grand, dramatic feel to it, much like the game the original track came from. Very nice. :)
